YOU CAN WRITE TO SELL!

by Marie Johnstone
WRITE STUFF. Not sure how to go about writing email copy for your ezine or your ecourse? Stick with me and you'll soon discover how you can write email copy guaranteed to sell.

GET PERSONAL. It may sound cheesy, but it's true: people just love to be mentioned by name. Personalised emails are far less likely to see the insides of a trash can and get picked out and read before the rest of the mail. Limited use of names within the body of the email can draw attention to important points, but if this is overdone it will loose its effectiveness. If you use smart autoresponders, these will make personalising your email copy a breeze.

YOU THERE! Write as though you are speaking to a single person by using 'you' and 'your'. Remember, your readers may be slightly interested in you, and that sure can be flattering I know, but ultimately they are interested in themselves only. They want to know what you can do for them. Tell them.

WRITE LIKE YOU TALK. All the best newsletters I read are written in a natural style - so natural that you can almost imagine the writer right there, talking to you. You don't have a perfect command of English and please don't try to be someone you're not. Write as though you are talking to a friend and most of your readers will come to regard you as this.

WILL IT SCAN? People tend to be impatient creatures - always in a rush, always wanting to get right down to the very bone. Make it real easy for people to scan through your copy by providing telling subheadings which give a brief idea for those who keep their fingers poised over the scrolling mouse wheel.

SHORT IS SWEET. Reading off a computer screen is hardly an ideal way to read: eye strain from bright screens; limited time online before getting back to: work, school, household tasks; the boredom factor. It's amazing really if what you write is given much attention at all! Best then to stick to short paragraphs followed by a nice white space for that little breather that we all need and love.

CUT THE HYPE. Don't insult me by making me read statements which tell me how I can earn a million in just 10 days - or anything similar, you know the type of copy I mean. Honesty is the best policy - stick to telling me the *real* benefits of the product you are trying to sell.

STORIES SELL. I don't know what it is, but real-life stories are always fascinating. If you have a story to tell which is relevant to your product, use it. Using a story will make your copy more memorable - and more saleable.

SPAM PROOF. Not only should you reread your copy for silly mistakes and spell check it, nowadays you should spam check your message as well! Spam check? What you may not realise is that many people now have anti-spam software which filter out any suspicious emails before they are downloaded by the user. Anti-spam software work by using filters which assess the content of your email - you may be unknowingly using words and phrases which cause your email to remain undelivered.

CHECK FREE. Get a free spam check report by delivering a copy of the email you want to send out to: spamcheck-writetosell1@sitesell.net Just put TEST in the subject line and the email report you get back will let you know whether your message may be blocked.

GIVE IT SOME. If I've got just one final little success secret to share with you, it is this: whatever you do, do it with enthusiasm. Enthusiasm will: land you a job over someone who may have more experience and qualifications than you, be responsible for a rapid rise up the career ladder, win you plenty of friends and earn you respect and money. I know this to be true because it is a technique I first discovered 15 years ago and one that I have been successful with in so many areas of my life. Enthusiasm sure as heck pays.
