WHAT IS THE USAGE OF SEARCH ENGINES AND DIRECTORIES? by Arakkal M Sebastian Searching Search.Com "Why should I do this ?
If you don't know which search engine or directory to use, you
might want to check out Search.com. This site, run by c/net, is
essentially a "directory of directories," or what techs call a
"metasearch" site. Use Search.com to look for the best search
engine for your needs. It lists dozens of smaller, more topic-
specific search engines and directories in addition to the normal
large search sites.
Searching Yahoo! "Why should I do this?
The most popular search site on the Web has a funny name
with an exclamation point at the end: Yahoo! Is not a search
engine it's a directory of Web sites. Yahoo! Hand-picks sites
for its directory, organizes the sites by category, gives you the
option of searching its directory for the sites you need.
Searching Lycos "Why should I do this?
Where Yahoo! is not a search engine (it's a directory), Lycos
most definitely is a search engine. Lycos uses a special software
program called a spider to roam the Web and catalog new pages
and sites as they are created. The downside of Lycos (and other
search engines) is that the sites listed are not qualified or
organized in any way. The upside, of course, is that Lycos
lists a lot more sites that does Yahoo! or any directory.
Searching Infoseek "Why should I go this?
Like Yahoo!, Infoseek is a directory with Web sites that have
been hand-picked for the listing. Unlike Yahoo!, Infoseek also
includes a search engine, called Ultraseek, as part of its site.
This means you get the best of both worlds - the handpicked
listings in the Infoseek directory and a much larger universe
of sites with the Ultraseek search engine.
Searching AltaVista "Why should I do this?
Alta Vista is the most popular search engine for the Web.
Developed by the engineers at Digital Equipment Corporation,
AltaVista is powered by numerous powerful DEC computers,
which gives it a speed and breadth beyond its competitors.
The downside of AltaVista is that sometimes returns too may
results; you often have to click through several pages of results
to find the right one. But you will get more results with
AltaVista than with other engines; it's a definite ase of
quantity over quality.
Web Sites for News and Information
With the World Wide Web, you can get just about the news
you want: current news eadlines, in-depth topic analyses,
specialized industry and company news, even news
customized for your city or town. In fact, almost every major
newspaper, agazine and televisionnews organization has
a site on the Web, many of which offer more current news
than you'll find in their other-media versions. Information
comin various formon the Web. Some sites just repackage
their rint news. Other sites offer a shorter, digest-like version
of breaking stories. Still other sites offer more in-depth
information online than they do in print. he one thing that
I like about getting any news online is that it's always up-to-date.
Most news-based Web sites update their information constantly,
so you can find out what's happening pretty much as it happens.
There's no waiting around for the nightly news report,
the morning newspaper, or the weekly newsmagazine.
A few of the sites (including CNN ) let you create a "ticker"
directly on you Windows 95 desktop. By clicking a button at
these sites, you'll create a special window or icon that scrolls
the latest news, scores, or stock reports automatically. (Note that
these "tickers" are only updated while you're connected to the
Web; when you break your connection, they can't
update their information.)
Visiting CNN Online for Current News "Why would I do this?"
CNN is the main source for news on cable and satellite
systems. It goes to figure that CNN would also be a powerful
force in the online world - in fact, it's one of the best news
sources on the Web. In addition, CNN also runs some related
sites with more specialized information, such as CNNfn for
financial news.
Visiting CNNfn for Financial News "Why would I do this?"
CNNfn is CNN's cable cousin, specializing in financial news
and information. Just as CNN online is the premiere Web site
for general news, CNNfn is the premiere Web site for financial
news. Look here for all your market information, including
in-depth financial reporting, personal finance news,
research information, and current stock quotes .
Things to do on the Web
Making Travel Plans. There are literally hundreds of different
Web sites offering travel-related information; many of these
sites also let you book your own flight and hotel reservations.
It's really convenient to book your travel online. You can find
out what's available and for what cost, and then confirm
everything right from home. Many sites (such as MapQuest.com)
also let you create a map of your destination.
Shopping. The number of stores operating on the Internet has
now reached tens of thousands. Virtually every big retailer and
many small retailers offer the capability to shop and purchase
merchandise right from your Web browser. The Internet Mall site
collects the Web addresses of more than 22,000 online merchants.
Once you enter an online merchant's site, it's just like shopping
from a catalog - except it's interactive! (Just make sure you have
your credit card handy when you start your online shopping spree)
Making Travel Plans on the Web. "Why would I do this?"
Web-based travel sites are good substitutes for travel agents.

TravelWeb is an all-in-one Web site that makes booking
your reservations as easy as a few mouse clicks!
Shopping on the Web "Why should I do this?"
While web browsing will probably never replace mall
browsing, it's quite convenient to shop for and order
merchandise right from your computer keyboard. In fact,
shopping via the Internet is a lot like shopping from a
direct mail catalog; the only difference is, you don't have t
o bother making a phone call and dealing with an operator!
With so many merchants opening up online storefronts, you
want to start at a site that lists just about every store
available online.
