FREEDOM TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP by Julie Jordan Scott
William Woodsworth said it this way: "How does the Meadow flower
its bloom unfold? Because the lovely little flower is free Down to its root,
and in that freedom bold."
Freedom comes through many connections. At first appearances, it
may even take us by surprise.
Look at this example from my car, for example.
In my family we personify lots of things. Cars are special cases.
My beautiful red Dodge Caravan is gleaming and pristine from the
inside out. Pulling into my driveway this afternoon I was literally
brimming over with joy from being in her presence. Her name Rebekah
VaNessa. After all, she is a Red Van.
Today was a banner day because Rebekah VaNessa got her second car
wash of the week. She hadn't been completely messy though she had
already been well used by my children.
I wanted her to gleam. I wanted to have all the dust-and-crumbs
that come with kid schlepping vacuumed up and out of her seats and
floorboards.
In doing so, I brought myself a rather incredible amount of joy and
gratitude, which lead right into a rather grand experience of
abundance.
Do you wonder how this all started?
One of the local carwashes is offering unlimited carwashes for a set
price. I have a barcoded sticker on my windshield so I can glide in
and have the van washed as often as she needs it without paying an
additional fee. I really relish tipping the gentleman who does the
finishing touches everytime, even more now than before!
Normally I wait until my car really needs to be washed before I wash
it.
Now that I have this nifty pass, I will wash her as soon as she
needs to be washed in a little way or whenever I feel she needs an
aesthetic a pick-me-up
With three children in and out all day, that may be more often than
not.
There is something freeing about having that bar code, "free pass"
to car washing at will.
I may actually spend a bit more in my car washing than I did before
yet there is a buoyancy in the freedom of being able to bring
Rebekah VaNessa in for a scrub and vacuum whenever I want however I
want in four locations all over town no less!
My long distance phone service is the same way. I could call
anywhere in the United States 24 hours a day for the same price. I
could walk around with my headset on constantly, I could call my
friends in Des Moines and have them listen to me sleep and it would
still be the same if I made one long distance call to one person all
month long.
There is freedom in knowing that I can.
There is true freedom whenever we reach a level of abundance which
stretches beyond our current or previous situation. All it takes is
choosing and acting. There was never anything stopping me from
washing the car all the time anytime before I had the magic
barcode.
And in the future when the barcode program no longer exists, I will
continue with the practice of washing my car at the slightest urging.
There is freedom in knowing I will.
This message goes beyond a clean car or talking on the phone as
often or as little as I feel like it.
The message also goes to you to ask you to explore where you might
be stopped by a perceived lack of freedom or a perceived belief
that "everything must be just so" before making any forward movement
towards what you desire.
You can start with the small, seemingly insignificant things like
telephone service or car washing or unlimited visits to the gym each
month or even an "as much as you care to eat" restaurant.
The truth is when you begin to experience this abundance in these
areas and really revel in how fantastic it is to be able to taste
and try the different foods and work out an amazing number of
machines any hour of the day like at the 24 hour fitness center and
literally sleep with your phone headset on while connected to your
best friend in Portland when you are in St. Louis. well, it IS a
really big thing!
The even bigger thing is stepping into the freedom that is next for
you.
There is freedom in knowing YOU will take that next step.
